Smoothing the way to big-kid-hood


Toddlers have a hard enough time with the day-to-day challenges of asserting their independence, being misunderstood, having boundaries placed on their deepest heart's desires to eat cat poo, climb roof tops, empty knife drawers and paint on walls. So, when you add the stress of having to cope with the major upheavals that may become part of this difficult phase - the arrival of a new sibling that steals mummy away, moving to a new house, starting daycare, suddenly having to control when they poo and wee, being given an ocean of bed with the freedom to get out at will, but being expected to lie down and just look at all the freedom - it can all get a bit much.

With this in mind, I devised a series of books to help smooth the way to "big-kid-hood" for my son, helping him to map out the what, where, how and why these changes had to take place. The books were an instant hit! In fact, the day he woke up to find Mummy and Daddy gone and family friends in their place, he knew that the baby was coming, that Mummy and Daddy were at the hospital, that Nanna and Papa would come to look after him and that he would visit Mummy and Baby for a few days before they came home. He was 20 months old.

Since then, I have been asked by a number of people to help them with smoothing the way for their toddlers through some of their challenging transitions and the books have always had a positive impact.

I use your photos, so your toddler can recognise all the players. I tailor a story to your needs, emphasising the positive changes that your brave hero toddler will make and reinforcing the love you have for your big little one at this exciting time.

The story is told in child friendly language, making the most of the rhythm, repetition and ideas that children respond to and, presented in a hardy, wire bound A5 format with perspex covers front and back, the book is designed to withstand the rigours of sticky fingers and many hours of enthusiastic handling.

And when you are done, when the transition has been made and the story has played out, these books become a keepsake that you can look back on and marvel at how far your little one has come.
